Online Somatic Psychotherapy

Person video chatting with a woman on a laptop at a table.

Online Sessions

We are able to offer the same level of care and service  with our online sessions as we are in our in person sessions too.

However, for these sessions to work you would need to have a device that you can use that has sound and a camera on, as the sessions need to be a video call. While it is not necessary, some people do find it better using headphones but that is down to personal preferences. This is because in somatic therapy its not just about what you are saying but also how the body language changes and what that is saying too. Often with the exercises being movement or expressive based its also important for these to be seen. While this may feel a little strange at first over time you quickly get use to it. Also make sure that the device is charged or with a plugged in supply so it doesn't die part way through the session.

Due to the nature of Microsoft Teams, which is the main software used for the online sessions, if you log in early and are waiting to be admitted don't worry, as there is a waiting room and will be able to enter when its time for the sessions to start. The link to your sessions will also be manually emailed out prior to your session too, which will be the reoccurring one to use. Just like with the in person sessions, there is a little extra time added to the first session, so if you are having tech issues getting in or struggling then don't worry it wont take your session time.

Location wise, due to the nature of the sessions it is important that these are done from a private space, one of the perks of headphones can allow it to feel that bit more private too, but if you're restricted in sessions due to not saying stuff that people around may over hear then we may lose out. Equally having other people or noises in the background could be distracting for both of us. Other than that, being in a place you find comfortable and able to have the device in front. It could be on the sofa, at your desk, or a table. As long as you are going to be comfortable through out that is what matters.

For the session itself, please wear what you find comfortable and relaxing, you do not need to be dress to impress. It is a good idea to have yourself some tissues, and a drink though ready with you for the session, some people often may bring a blanket or have a jumper to hand incase they start to get a little cold and we don't disrupt the session.

Just like with the in-person sessions the majority of the activities, especially ones that need props would be discussed in advanced and the feasibility of these being used would be discussed so you would not be expected to have bits on hand to use in a no different way to a suggestion of bringing something to the next session. For the movement based practices, they are generally done seated or some of them done stood but as long as you have space to stand on the spot with arms out and not hit anything, then that is the perfect amount of space.

If you have any other questions on our online practice then please do reach out and ask, we will be only too happy to help.
